Oh, yes… The time has come again. The period of inclement weather, fleece blankets and hot chocolate has arrived: winter. Not your green amigos’ favourite season, we can tell you. Because of the dark days, your plants get fewer hours of sunshine and they just love it. Therefore, the key question is: “How do I help my plants through the winter?”
Well, this is how!
1. Don’t over-water!
You wouldn’t know it, but the #1 cause of death for plants is too much water. Especially in the autumn and winter months. This is because plants use less energy and hibernate. The leaves evaporate less quickly than in spring or summer, so they need less water. Make sure that you only water your plants when the soil feels drier and check that there is no water left at the bottom of the pot.

2. Gettin’ hot in here.
With the temperatures dropping you might want to turn on the heating. Nothing wrong with that, but please do not put plants on or next to a warm heater. This can cause them to dry out very quickly or even burn their leaves. At least one metre from the heater should be fine. With floor heating, it can also quickly become too hot under the feet of your plants. The roots can dry out very much due to the warmth. Put the plant on a nice stool, table or rack and get your feet off the floor!
